Fraunhofer IBMT - Division Ultrasound

The Fraunhofer IBMT with the division Ultrasound offers its customers comprehensive access to the widest possible range in the field of ultrasound in general and sonar applications in particular. In recent years the Fraunhofer IBMT has impressively demonstrated its capabilities in projects for industrial customers as well as publicly funded projects with the development of a wide range of sonar systems for various applications.

Thanks to access to the entire competence chain of the division of Ultrasound (simulation, transducer development, electronics development, software development, production) and a network of experienced technology partners, the most diverse requirements of our customers can be efficiently implemented. With the aid of model-based simulations and initial preliminary trials, ultrasound antennas with customer-specific characteristics can be developed, built and characterized under realistic application conditions. For this purpose, among other things, we are equipped with various measurement tanks, a pressure chamber with a test pressure up to 600 bar as well as several water vehicles. The development and realization of adapted electronic systems (single-channel and multi-channel) for the excitation of the antennas and the evaluation of the received signals are as much part of the offer in the field of Sonar as the creation of all necessary software components. On request, the customer can have open access to the electronic system, which means he has full access to all data and signals at every point of the signal processing chain. Thanks to the high degree of flexibility and the access to all system components (antenna, electronic system, algorithms and software), we develop and realize the most efficient all-round solutions for our customers.

The development of production technologies certified in accordance with ISO 9001 rounds off our offer and allows the realization of prototypes and pilot series right up to serial production. In 2018, we will be holding the OCEANS and Techno-Ocean meetings together as a joint convention in Kobe for the first time in ten years.

In Japan, recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in public attention towards marine-related science and technology, and our marine industries. We are therefore delighted to be able to plan the hosting of OCEANS'18 MTS/IEEE Kobe / Techno-Ocean 2018 (OTO'18) in such a progressive environment. The theme for OTO'18 has been provisionally set under the wording 'Ocean Planet' It's our home.? The oceans, which cover 70% of the earth's surface, provide us with a wide variety of gifts including natural resources and energy, and we would like to use the convention to reconsider issues such as natural disasters and environmental concerns from the standpoint of the oceans. We also hope that by holding OTO'18 we will gain new opportunities to reconsider the importance of constructing and coordinating an international network under the changing international circumstances of present times.

The Kobe Convention Center, which will be the venue for OTO'18, is conveniently located on Port Island, about 10 minutes from downtown Kobe, one of Japan's foremost tourist destinations. Furthermore, the School of Marine Engineering will be established. In the next decade, the Shenzhen campus will become one of the Asia–Pacific region’s most important and internationally influential bases for innovation as well as a new growth pole of Sun Yat-sen University in its mission to establish itself as a first-tier international university.

SYSTEA SpA is a company which develops, manufactures and sales in the international market automated solutions to measure chemical parameters in water and other liquids. We developed all over more than 25 years of activity a deep knowledge in sea water analysis, expecially to automatically measure nutrients for laboratory, field and on-line applications. In this context, we are participating to the SMS European research project (http://www.project-sms.eu), in the frame of Ocean of Tomorrow cluster, where innovative modular analyzers to measure specific toxic algae species, their related toxins, PBDE, sulphonammides were developed and tested in laboratory. These automated modules, based on uLFR patented SYSTEA's analytical technology and applying Enzyme Linked Immuno-Magnetic Optical assays, are going to be tested on field on a floating platform in La Spezia (Italy) and on a coastal buoy in Piran (Slovenia), together with standard physical-chemical parameters and nutrients by the WIZ in-situ probe, an innovative product that was recently awarded in USA in the Nutrients Sensor Challenge organized by Alliance of Coastal Technologies.

The Aberdeen Institute of Energy is the central point of contact at the University for accessing all energy related teaching, research and training and is connected internally across all energy related disciplines and externally with a number of key partner organisations.

The School of Engineering has a strong pedigree in subsea optical sensors. Some of the work that will be included is underwater optical holography of marine organisms and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for material identification.
